Healthy Homes

Our healthy homes upgrade programme

We want to help you and your whānau live well in your home. The healthy homes upgrade programme will help make your home easier to keep warm, dry and healthy. We will also show you how to get the most out of any new items like heat pumps or ventilation fans that we install.

The upgrade will happen through four stages.

What's being upgraded?

Ventilation

We will install fans in your kitchen and bathroom to take damp air from cooking and bathing or showering to outside your home. This means your home will be drier, which will reduce mould and make the home easier to keep warm. We will also check the doors and windows in each room of your home to make sure that they are big enough to let fresh air in.

Insulation

We will check the insulation in your ceiling and under your floor (where we can get access). If the insulation has settled too much or has developed holes we will upgrade or replace it. Insulation helps to trap heat inside.

Stopping draughts

We will make sure that there are no leaks or gaps that can let cold air in. This includes checking the floor and walls, and around each door and window. If you have a fireplace or chimney we will also check that they don’t let cold air into your home.

Heating

We will install a heater that can heat your main living room to at least 18 degrees. In most cases we will install a heat pump, as these usually cost around half as much to run as other heaters.

Drainage and moisture outside

We will make sure that your roof, gutters and downpipes are working well to catch rainwater and move this away from your home. Where we can, we will install a plastic sheet underneath your home to stop dampness from the soil rising up into your floor.

We will also come and show you how to get the best value from using any new items that we install into your home. In some cases we might not be able to do all of the things described above. In this case we will do as much as we can, and will talk with you about what we have done.
